6.0 Paden Aron McCartney (April 08, 1827 - August 08, 1913)
Paden was born in Washington Co., PA (source: McCartney family bible; and National Archives Pension certificate #768934 & 768924). Paden was described in his military pension document as 5'9" tall with blue eyes, complexion light, and brown hair. Paden married Erie Ann Lake June 19, 1849 in Morrow Co., OH. Paden and Erie Ann's eight children were (1) Sanford; (2) Oscar Winfield; (3) Washington; (4) James A.; (5) Paden; (6) Mary Jane; (7) Doc; and (8) Sant.
Sometime between the birth of his fourth and fifth child and one year prior to brothers Isaac and George, Paden enlisted at Tipton, IA, September 23, 1861 under the name Padinarin for a 3-year term in Co. E. 11th Regiment Iowa Volunteers commanded by Captain McCloney. [Note, Paden was also listed in the 1850 Morrow Co., OH census under a similar name--Padanaram. The enumerator for the census and the person writing down the information for his enlistment combined his first and middle name phonetically. This might explain why he went by the initials P. A. in some directories and census.] Just nine months after joining, Paden was honorably discharged at St. Louis, MO for disability June 16, 1862. Eighteen years later on April 13, 1880, Paden filed a Declaration For Original Invalid Pension stating while serving in Boonville, MO on or about December 10, 1861, he contracted an indirect inguinal hernia on his left side and was treated at the hospital, "New House of Refuge" in St. Louis. His application for pension was approved at $20/month.On January 1, 1873, eight years after the birth of their eighth child, Erie Ann died in Elk Co. KS. Three years after his wife's death, Paden, age 49 of Elk Co., KS, married Lydia Maranda (Rumery) Whaley, age 38 of Greenwood Co., KS, at Charlestown, also in Greenwood Co. on March 14, 1876. Lydia's first husband, Otis Oliver Whaley passed away October 24, 1865. Paden and Lydia resided in Kingman (Kingman Co.), KS for a number of years before moving to Templeton (San Luis Obispo Co.), CA in 1892 and lastly to Los Gatos (Santa Clara Co.), CA in 1912 where Paden died one year later on August 8, 1913. Three years after her husband's death, Lydia age 79, while residing in the Woman's Relief Corps Home of San Jose (Santa Clara Co.), CA applied for a widow's pension September 22, 1916. Lydia passed away June 2, 1923.
Children:
6.1 Sanford McCartney born September 9, 1848 in IL married (1) Susanna Donart on December 30, 1877 in Greenwood Co., KS. Sanford and Susanna's only child was Charles Nathan. Susanna may have died while giving birth to Charles. The 1880 federal census (Nebraska) shows Charles, age 2, living with his aunt and uncle--John and Mary Miller. The 1900 census lists Charles residing in Salubria, Washington Co., ID. He died five years later in Salubria. It is likely Charles moved to Salubria because his mother's parents, Nathan and Catherine (Kistler) Donart (http://www3.nd.edu/~tmiller5/family-history/nathan-donart.html) lived there as well. Susanna was the ninth of seventeen children.
Sanford married (2) Martha (Lockard) Whiteside 1883 in Fall River, Wilson Co., KS. Martha was a widow having previously married Joseph Whiteside.
