2.0 Anna (McCartney) Duncan (June 02, 1814 - October 14, 1882)
Anna was born in Westmoreland Co., PA (source: McCartney family bible; and Anna's obituary in Wilton Review, Wilton, IA October 19, 1892). The McCartney family bible lists Anna's year of birth as 1812, whereas her obituary and gravestone list it as 1814. It is more probable that she was born in 1814 as this matches her age as listed in latter census records. Anna married Robert B. Duncan December 7, 1830. Anna and Robert's ten children were: (1) unknown son; (2) Thomas Buchanan; (3) Frederick T.; (4) Mary Marie; (5) Jacob "Perry" Andrew; (6) Lydia Ann; (7) John Mack; (8) Sarah Margaret; (9) Daniel S.; and (10) Alonzo Curtis.
1850 Census of Morrow Co. OH, Cardington Twp. (p 384, 494/496 and 495/497) places Anna-(age 35) and her husband Robert B. Duncan and their children living beside Anna's mother Lydia McCartney and four of Anna's siblings. Anna and her husband moved to Cedar Co., IA in 1852. The 1860 and 1870 federal census of Cedar Co. shows Anna and her husband and their children residing in Farmington Twp. It is not known when or if they ever moved to nearby Wilton where many of their relatives lived. Anna and Robert are buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton.

2.5 Jacob "Perry" Andrew Duncan born February 21, 1843
in Akron, OH married Susannah F. Reeves July 16,1865 in Wilton Junction,
IA by Rev. Datson. Their seven children were (1) William; (2) Lidy A.; (3)
Edith Rossella; (4) Orlo Ludell; (5) Charles Oliver; (6) Martha; and (7)
Arthur. Jacob passed away May 13, 1934 in Muscatine, IA and Susannah December
18, 1901. Jacob, his wife and three of their children are buried together
in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton, Section F, Lot 33, in close proximity to Jacob's
parents Robert B. and Anna (McCartney) Duncan.
Jacob enlisted as a private on September 16, 1861 at Davenport, IA in Co. D 11th Regiment Iowa Volunteers in the Civil War serving under Lt. Col. J.C. Abercrombie/Col. W. Hall/Capt. Jas. Kelly. After having served his term of duty, Jacob was discharged at Vicksburg on December 31, 1863. A day later though, on January 1, 1864 while still in Vicksburg, Jacob re-enlisted as a veteran in the same Company. Eleven months after re-enlistment Jacob suffered a gunshot injury--That while in said service, and in the line of his duty near Macon, in the state of Georgia on the 22nd day of November 1864 he received the following wound or disability, to wit:
...while unloading a Govenment wagon, in the line of his duty, having been ordered by Frank Walter, a Sergt in said Co and Regt. who was in command of a squad of men detailed for the purpose of unloading wagons pitching tents Ec. for the field officers of the Brigade of Light Artillery there under command of Col. Waterhouse, while on a march, "Sherman's march to the sea," from Atlanta, to Macon Georgia. A shot gun which had been placed in the said wagon was accidently discharged, throwing a large load of Buck Shot into his thigh and fracturing the thigh bone and causing his present disability for which he claims Pension and that his present disability is such that he cannot do a half days work without much pain [Declaration For Invalid Pension, May 8, 1867; District Court, Muscatine, IA].
Seven months after his injury of which Jacob spent time in several hospitals, he was again discharged from service in Davenport July 6, 1865. Ten days later Jacob married Susannah. After his discharge, Jacob resided in the following locations:
(1865-1882) in Wilton Jct.(1882-1892) in the towns of Parkston, Mabel, and Dakota City, Hutchinson Co., South Dakota. It is assumed they moved to SD to be near Susannah's relatives, Silas Reeves and W.C. Reeves(1892-1911) in Wilton Jct. [During which time Susannah passed away](1911-ca 1918) 1218 E. 2nd St., Muscatine, IA(ca 1918-1925) 1430 1/2 Harrison St. Davenport, IA(ca 1925-1934) 1008 E. 10th St., Muscatine, IA [residence of his son, Charles]
Over a span of fifty-plus years (1867-1920s), Jacob applied for a military pension and increases to that pension. At times his requests were denied and at other times they were approved. Pension claims were based on the degree of a person's disability. In Jacob's case, his disability was initially rated by medical doctors at one fourth and later increased by his request and re-examination to three fourths even though he requested to be classified as fully disabled. The progression of his pension payments were as follows: $2/month in 1867; $12/month in1907; $25/month in 1913; $30/month in 1918; $72/month in1925; and $90/month in 1933. This process of requesting increases in pension required on his part the hiring of several attorneys, court costs and a plethora of paper work. During this time Jacob also claimed he had been injured from heat stroke in July 1864 while serving in "Sherman's March to the Sea" near Kennasaw Mountain, Georgia.
Jacob's military and pension documents describe him as 5' 10" tall, 150-160 lb., complexion dark, brown eyes, dark hair and a farmer at the time of enlistment. Jacob passed away May 13, 1934 in Muscatine, and his wife Susannah thirty-two years earlier December 18, 1901.
