During the Civil War Enoch mustered in to Company G Lafayette Calvary April 21, 1864, a week after brother Ishamel. Enoch's father, David J. McCartney, took Enoch to New Brighton, Beaver Co., PA to be mustered in. David signed consent as Enoch, age 17, was a minor at the time. Enoch was absent at muster out June 1, 1865 and was listed as a deserter (Per 1890 Veterans schedule). Later records obtained from National Archives indicate Enoch was captured by enemy at Martinsburg, VA, on September 18, 1864 and confined at Richmond September 27, 1864. Per Ancestry.com, Enoch served with Distinction while in service. Enoch's brother Ishamel was also absent at muster out June 1, 1865, but had deserted and was later arrested December 2, 1864 at Green Co., PA along with brother John Emery McCartney.
