Ishamel was born April 23, 1845 in Washington Co., PA, died November 13, 1911 in Washington Co., PA, and was buried at Pigeon Creek United Presbyterian Church Cemetery. He married (1) Sarah J. about 1867. Sarah was born 1838 in Washington Co., PA, and died before 1880. He married (2) Arabella about 1880. She was born June 1859 in PA.

During the Civil War Ishamel mustered in to Company G Lafayette Calvary April 14, 1864, and mustered out June 1, 1865 (Washington County Military records). He was absent at muster out. Ishamel entered the same time as brother Enoch at New Brighton, Beaver Co., PA, but deserted November 3, 1864 at Martinsburg, VA. He was arrested December 2, 1864 at Green Co., PA. Military records indicate Ishamel and brother John Emery McCartney deserted together.
