1751-1772 Emigration from Ireland to PA
Assuming Ephraim's father was between the ages of 18-21 at the time of Ephraim's birth in 1772, it is probable he emigrated from Ireland between 1751-1772 prior to the American Revolutionary War.

Marriage of Ephraim McCartney to Ann Sanford in Mifflin Co. 1790 Federal Census (the same year as Ephraim's marriage) lists Ephraim and family residing in Mifflin Co. as well as other McCartney families:

Ephraim's father-in-law, Abram Sanford (1, 0, 1, 0, 0), (pg. 126) is listed as residing near Ephraim at the time of the census. Another probable relative of Ephraim, Abrm Sanford (1-2-1-0-0), (pg. 121) is listed as well. Mifflin Co. was established a year earlier from portions of Cumberland and Northumberland counties.

1800 census lists an Ephraim McCartney/McCourtney and family residing in Fawn, York Co. (1, 2, 0, 1, 0, 1, 2, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0), (pg. 3). I do not believe this Ephraim McCourtney or Ephraim M. Courtney as the document is written in a land warrant for York Co., is our Ephraim. There is an Ephraim McCourtney (name appears as McCurtney or McCourtney) that is listed consistently in York county in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census. This Ephraim McCourtney died in York county 4 Nov 1822. This family, always McCourtney or variant, has descendants that stayed in York county and their lineage is well documented. It is interesting to note though, that a Robert and James Duncan are residing nearby (pg. 2), also in Fawn. The Duncan family later married into our McCartney family, beginning with child #2, Anna (McCartney) Duncan, who married a Robert B. Duncan in 1830.

Birth of child No. 1 - Mary R., November 16 (source: McCartney family bible). Bedford was formed as a county from Cumberland Co. in 1771. Later, the Bedford area was subdivided and further subdivided into Blair, Cambria, Fayette, Fulton, Greene, Huntingdon, Somerset, Westmoreland and Washington counties.

1820 Federal Census (Microfilm # M33-98, page 11A, line 18), finds the family of Robert Isaac McCartney living in the District Bedford Boro/Bedford Twp. (2-0-0-1-0-0 / 1-1-1-0-0):

Males 1 (16-25)--Robert Isaac (age 29). Note, enumerator placed Robert in the wrong column--Robert should have been listed under age (26-45).

1820 Federal Census lists an Ephraim McCartney/McCourtney residing three counties east of Bedford Co., in Peach Bottom Twp. (0-1-0-1-0-1 / 0-1-2-0-1). See 1800 census above for information on this family.

On August 14, Robert Isaac McCartney and family began their move from Washington Co., PA, to Washington Twp., Marion Co., OH. They arrived at Ashland, OH August 20th. They started on the 26th for Washington Twp., finally arriving on the 28th.

1835 Marion Co., OH
On August 25, the family moved to nearby Cardington Twp. within the same county. 

1837 Marion Co., OH
Death of Robert Isaac McCartney on December 24 in Cardington.

The 1840 Federal Census of Washington Twp. lists Lydia McCartney and children residing (0-1-2-3-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0 / 0-1-1-0-0-0-1-0-0-0-0-0-0). Based on Robert’s will and assuming Robert attempted to list his children in birth order, Catherine should be approx. 19 in 1840. It is possible that Robert incorrectly listed Catherine before Jacob when she should have followed Jacob, as Jacob was born in 1823 and Paden in 1827. This gap allows for another birth between, which would put Catherine closer to the census age. Or, she was a twin to Paden (Paden’s daughter had twins).

1848 Formation of Morrow Co., OH
Note: in 1848 several portions of Marion Co. became part of the newly formed Morrow Co., OH. This included the two aforementioned townships of Washington and Cardington as described in this timeline.

1850 Morrow Co., OH
Cardington Twp. (495/497) lists Lydia (55), and sons Daniel (33), Robert (31), Washington (20), and Isaac (17). 

1852 Cedar Co., IA
On September 13, Lydia left for Iowa to spend the remainder of her life with relatives.

1852 -- 1870
Between 1852-1870, many of the McCartney families and family members moved to Tipton, Cedar Co. IA, and then on to nearby Wilton Junction, Muscatine Co., with the exception of Mary R. McCartney and her husband Reuben Story who remained behind in Iberia, Washington Twp., OH.
